Here, I will describe triplet-singlet energy transfer-based bulk heterojunction PSCs in which iridium complexes (Ir(III) complexes) are incorporated in the photoactive materials for poly(thieno[3,4-b]-thiophene/benzodithiophene) (PTB7) and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). For this aim, we designed four different customised energy donor materials for PTB7 and P3HT by molecular engineering the Ir(III) complexes. This results in an approximately 20% increase in the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the devices based on both PTB7 and P3HT, with the PCE being 8.72% for the PTB7 device and 3.63% for the P3HT device. This suggests that the Ir(III) complexes are suitable for use with both amorphous and crystalline polymers, owing to their tunable energy bands and molecular compatibility. Thus, using Ir(III) complexes as additives, it should be possible to achieve efficient energy transfer while ensuring desirable active layer morphology, resulting in improved light absorption and conversion. |
