제목 Optical Properties of Oriented PVA-Dye Polarizing Films
초록 Polymeric sheet polarizing films are important optical components for a variety of commercial applications such as antiglare sunglasses, photography filter, optical instruments, and liquid crystal displays (LCDs).1
Conventionally, these polarizing films are manufactured from oriented sheet of semicrystalline PVA (poly (vinyl alcohol)) film containing polyiodine molecules as the dichroic material. However, a polarizing film made of iodine and PVA is susceptible to heat and moisture attack. Much effort has been made to improve the durability of iodine polarizing films r and polarizing films made of dichroic dyes have been proposed as an alternative. But, a dye polarizer suffers from a low degree of dichroism that makes it difficult to use for applications requiring high-contrast imaging. Therefore, an improvement of the dichroism is the most important task in the study of dye polarizing films.2-3
In this study, we synthesized three azo dyes with reactive groups and three azo dyes without them and surveyed the effect of reactive groups on optical properties. The optical properties (transmittance and degree of polarization) of polarizing films were investigated by UV-Vis. Spectrophotometer with a Glan-Tompson polarizer. And the durability of oriented PVA-dye polarizing film was examined as well.
