VAMAC-G Nanocomposites Using Montmorillonite and Cloisite |

Vamac-G or ethylene acrylic elastomer from Du Pont, is well-known for its excellent high temperature durability coupled with low temperature flexibility and oil resistance with service lubricants. This paper focuses on the detailed analysis of diamine crosslinking kinetics, mechanical properties, solvent swelling behavior and thermal degradation of Vamac-G in the presence of montmorillonite and cloisite in comparison to carbon black and silica. The increase in d-spacing values from X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies of the samples reveals the intercalation phenomena in these systems. It has been found that the cure behavior of all the mixes follows first order kinetics. Also, an increase in the cure activation has been noted with increasing loading of sodium-montmorillonite and cloisite at all the temperatures studied. In agreement with the intercalation phenomena, considerable improvement in the mechanical performance of the composites has been obtained with the increasing loading of cloisite. These data has been supported by the scanning electron microscopic fractography pictures also. Solvent sorption studies also has been performed to analyze the net work variation in the vulcanizates and to establish the nano-clay reinforcement phenomena relative to carbon black and silica |
