Self Polishing Properties of Zinc containing Copolymers for Antifouling Paints |

Antifouling paints are used to protect ship hulls from fouling settlement and to improve craft speed by reducing water friction. Since 2003, antifouling paints contained organotin antifoulants have been banned after demonstrating toxic effects on non-target marine invertebrates. It was found that zinc methacrylate have leached out into sea water and it is considered due to the ion exchange reaction between zinc in the polymers and sodium in the sea water. As the ion exchange reaction proceeds, the polymers become soluble and leach out by flow of sea water. In order to investigate influences of resin compositions such as content of zinc methacrylate, hydrophilicity and molecular weight of copolymers, the zinc methacrylate copolymers with various monomer compositions were prepared. The characterizations of copolymers were analyzed by FT-IR, 1H-NMR and GPC. Leaching rate of copolymers was determined from the reduction of film thickness after sea water immersion in a dynamic condition. |
