Photodynamic therapy (PDT) offers the advantage of an effective and selective method of destroying diseased tissues without damaging surrounding healthy tissues, compared to current treatments including surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. In photodynamic therapy, one of the problems limiting the use of many photosensitizers (PS) is the difficulty in preparing pharmaceutical formulations that enable their parenteral administration. Due to their low water solubility, the hydrophobic PS cannot be simply injected intravenously. To achieve targeted PS nanoparticulate system, folic acid-conjugated amphiphilic block copolymers were synthesized. The synthesis and composition of copolymers composed of PEG and PBLA were confirmed by 1H-NMR measurements and colorimetric method. The properties of the nanoparticles were described by critical micelle concentration, size and size distribution and PS loading contents. |
