The colorfilter is a key component for rendering color images in liquid crystal display panel. The colorfilter layer is fabricated with colorants that contain red, green, blue color from either dyes or pigments. These colorants play roles in converting white back light into R, G, B colors. The requirements of colorants for LCD colorfilter are as follows ; high color purity, high transmittance, and high stability against heat, light and chemicals. Currently, the colorfilter is manufactured by pigment-dispersed method using pigments as colorants but this method is complicated and lowers transmittance due to low dispersity of pigments. To develop simpler process and obtain better optical properties, ink-jet printing method using dyes can be an alternative, but dyes for this method have lower durability than pigments. Therefore, in this study various azo dyes were designed and synthesized from the viewpoint of thermal stability. Thermal and optical properties of the prepared dyes were investigated using DSC(differential scanning calorimetery), TGA(thermogravimetric analysis) and UV-visible spectrophotometery. As an experiment, colorfilters coated with prepared dyes were made in a different concentration of dyes. And we investigated variations of thermal resistance according to changing concentration of dyes and heating time of colorfilter. In these methods, we examined a new practical application of synthesized dyes for LCD colorfilter. |
