Self-cleaning performance of sol-gel derived Ag-F-TiO2/SiO2 double layer thin films |

The self-cleaning properties of the Ag-F-TiO2/SiO2 double layer thin films prepared by sol-gel method were investigated. Thin films were prepared by spin-coating onto glass and then thermally treated at 400℃(SiO2) and 500℃(Ag-F-TiO2). The prepared thin films were characterized for their physical and chemical properties by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-Vis spectrophotometer, atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and photoluminescence (PL). UV-Vis absorption spectra showed that the light absorption of Ag-F-TiO2/SiO2 in the visible region had a significant enhancement compare with TiO2/SiO2. The photo-induced hydrophilicity of the films was evaluated by water contact angle measurement in air. The self-cleaning properties of the films were studied by the photocatalytic degradation of the methylene blue under UV and visible light irradiation. The highest photocatalytic degradation was obtained for Ag-F-TiO2/SiO2 under UV and visible light irradiation. The interaction between F species and metallic Ag in the Ag-F-TiO2/SiO2 was responsible for improving the self-cleaning properties. The Ag-F-TiO2/SiO2 double layer thin films are plausibly applicable to developing self-cleaning materials in various applications such as windows, solar panels, cement and paints. |
