Surface reconstruction of oxygen plasma-treated polypropylene |

Injection-moulded polypropylene with different degree of crystallinity has been characterized both before and after surface treatment by oxygen plasma. The crystallinity of untreated polypropylene has been determined using differential scanning calorimetry and wide angle X-ray scattering. The chemical properties of polymeric surface have been investigated by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and contact angle measurements. The morphology of oxygen plasma-treated polypropylene surface is studied using SEM. The degree of cross-linking on the surface has been estimated by gel content measurements. The polymeric surface was altered by introducing polar hydrophilic group through the plasma treatment and the modified surface was reconstructed by aging. XPS and contact angle measurements have indicated that the aging effect was lowered on increasing the crystallinity of the sample. This is due to the decrease in mobility of the polymeric chains caused by an increased crystalline order on the surface. Similar effects have been observed by enhancing the degree of cross-linking at the surface. |
