Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite (IPMC) consists of ion exchange membrane and two metal electrodes. Due to its light weight and large displacement in relatively low voltage, IPMC can be applied in biomedical research such as micro actuator devices and mechanical bending sensor. In many cases, evaporation of inner solvent in IPMC is one of the significant problems, and cause of low signal of IPMC sensor. To prevent solvent evaporation, we applied parylene as a hydrophobic polymer coating for IPMC surface shielding. The parylene was coated by dry deposition method and its thickness was about 3 µm. In this research, we verified the membrane properties and sensor properties of IPMC, including the suggestion of its potential and capability as mechanical bending sensor. Also, we confirmed the effect of water content on sensor signal, and resolved the evaporation problem by parylene coating. |
