Characterization of Epoxy/CNT Nanocomposites Comprising Surface Modified CNTs |

Homogeneous dispersion and strong interfacial bonding have been found to be necessary conditions to take full advantage of the remarkable properties of nanotubes for reinforcement of composites. We have developed a fully integrated nanotube composite material through the functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes were oxidized in organic acids. The surface modification of the oxidized nanotubes was achieved by refluxing the nanotubes with multi-functional amines. The functionalized nanotubes were embedded in epoxy resin and the resulting composite was investigated by transmission-electron microscopy (TEM). The functionalization led to a reduced agglomeration and evidences are given for improved interaction between the nanotubes and epoxy resin matrix. |
