In this work, the UHMWPE composites with different carbon nanotube (CNT) contents have been prepared by melting process method. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was performed to investigate the effect of nanotube content on the thermal stability of the CNTs/UHMWPE composites. The impact strengths of the composites were also measured using the Izod impact tester. As a result, the volume resistivity of the composites was decreased with increasing the CNT content that could be governed in a percolation-like power law with a relatively low percolation threshold. And there was a retardation of the onset of UHMWPE decomposition for the composites with low nanotube loadings and temperatures, which was likely to be a result of absorption, by the activated carbon surfaces, of free-radicals generated during polymer decomposition. It was then noted that the impact strengths of the composites containing the nanotubes were improved in the growing of the toughness of the composites. |
