Poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is a large volume plastic that has been used for fibers and films for many years. The primary objective of the development of PET/clay nanocomposites is improvement of the gas barrier property which is required for beverage and food packagings. Recently, many researches on the preparation of the exfoliated PET/clay nanocomposites have been carried out to enhance the physical properties of the PET using the commercial organoclays. In this study, PET/clay nanocomposite is prepared by melt blending of PET with novel organically modified Na-montmorillonite (Na-MMT). The organoclay is obtained by cation exchange reaction of Na-MMT and synthesized organic modifier which has a cation exchangeable phosphonium ion and a ester exchangeable hydroxyl group. In X-ray diffraction pattern, the intercalation of the organic modifier into the silicate layers of the Na-MMT is observed. In addition, the (001) reflection peak of PET/clay nanocomposite disappears, indicating that PET/clay nanocomposite has the exfoliated structure. From Transmission electron microscopy, it is confirmed that the organoclay in the PET/clay nanocomposite is dispersed into the PET.
