Tin oxide (SnO2) nanowires were coated with a Co shell layer via the sputtering method. The thermal annealing-induced changes in morphologies, microstructures, and compositions of the resulting core-shell nanowires were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The NO2 gas sensing test demonstrated the ability of the metal functionalization strategy, to attain the higher sensitivity and faster response than bare SnO2 nanowires. The mechanisms for improvement of the sensing properties by metal-functionalization were specualted. [H. W. Kim, Y. J. Kwon, H. Y. Cho, H. G.
