The PIMs, novel microporous polymers, are mainly consisted of polybenzodioxane structure with contorted moiety. Such an awkward structure leads to high free volume and is related to the high permeability of the casted PIM membrane. To synthesize advanced PIMs, various post modification methods have been currently used. In this work, highly carboxylate functionalized PIMs were successfully synthesized by using alkaline hydrolysis of PIM-1. The contents of carboxylic acid in polymer matrix were confirmed by 1H NMR and elemental analysis, indicating that the resulted polymer had carboxylic acid groups of 92%. This post-modification resulted simultaneously in the decreased cavity size and increased CO2 affinity, which were directly related to enhance diffusivity-selectivity and solubility-selectivity, respectively. This synergetic effect of HCPIM endowed this membrane with the highest selectivity of 53 in CO2/N2 pairs among the chemically modified PIMs ever reported. |
