The microcapsule can encapsulate the functional species in the core, and the species can be released under stimuli condition such as osmotic pressure due to the deformation of shell thickness. In particular, the stimuli-responsive microcapsules with a colloidal crystal shell which exhibit structural color, can monitor the stimuli-triggered release through the structural color change. Here, we design elastic photonic microcapsules using W/O/W double emulsion droplets as a template. As a shell phase, the dispersion of silica-in-PEGPEA are used. Silica particles from crystalline array in the pPEGPEA due to the repulsive interaction, which renders the photonic microcapsules showing structural colors. The encapsulants in the core can release by adjusting shell thickness under hypotonic condition, and the triggered release can be monitored through the structural color change. Thus, the elastic microcapsules have great potential to use as capsule-type sensors for monitoring the drug release. |
