Study on the electrostatic effects on the interfacial phenomena of proteins |

The interfacial behavior of biomolecules, proteins in particular, characterizes a variety of biological phenomena. The adsorbed proteins can modulate the cellular responses including adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. Therefore, adsorptive behavior of proteins can be one of the most important factors which can determine the success of implant materials. In this study, we investigated the charge effect on protein adsorption using positively and negatively charged proteins. In particular, sequential adsorption was performed in order to analyze the effect of pre-adsorbed protein molecules on incoming protein adsorption. The effect of the surface hydrophilicity on protein adsorption was also examined. Relative amount of adsorbed protein was quantified using FT-IR and surface hydrophilicity was determined using goniometer. |
