The cobalt oxide with a well-known mixed valence, which has a normal spinel structure with Co2+ ions in tetrahedral interstitial sites and Co3+ ions in the octahedral interstitial sites, is a remarkable candidate in applying nanostructured anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Its theoretical capacity of 890 mA h g-1 is nearly three times as high as that of graphite (372 mA h g-1) due to its eight-electrons transfer reaction during cycling. Thin single-shelled Co3O4 hollow microspheres are synthesized by the formation of carbon sphere@metal-glycolate by a solvothermal and synthesis of thin shell Co3O4 hollow microspheres from carbon sphere@metal-glycolate by a calcination process. The thin single-shelled structure is very suitable for enhancing electrochemical performance by offering high surface area, high pore volume, and well-developed interior spaces accommodating volume variation. |
