Surface modification of the prepared poly(vinyl esters) materials in heterogeneous state |

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) produced from poly(vinyl ester) or poly(vinyl ether) by saponification is a linear semicrystalline polymer. It is commonly known that PVA films can be prepared by solution-casting a PVA solution. For the first time, PVA film was prepared by the saponification of a poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) film in a heterogeneous state. Unlike the general PVA films, our heterogeneously saponified film showed unusual black globules of different sizes in the film structure. It was found that the degree of saponification depended on the temperature and alkaline solution concentration. 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, XRD, and FTIR spectroscopy were used to reveal changes in the heterogeneous saponified films.
