Cobalt-mediated radical polymerization (CMRP) was reported to be a very effective method to mediate the controlled radical polymerization of non-conjugated vinyl monomers, such as vinyl acetate and N-vinyl pyrrolidone. In the CMRP systems, most of the polymer ω chain ends are end-capped by cobalt(III) complexes, which can be used as macroinitiators. The C-Co homolytic cleavage of polymer-Co(acac)2 can be used to functionalize the polymer ωchain end and to carry out other synthetic approaches. PVAc macroradicals generated by the homolytic cleavage of the C-Co bonds of PVAc-Co(acac)2 chains were directly grafted to MWCNTs via radical addition reactions. Also, well-defined PVAc-b-PSt and PVAc-b-P4VP block copolymers were successfully synthesized by a combination of CMRP and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. |
