The conducting polymer-coated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared by in situ polymerization of pyrrole on the surface of MWCNTs to improve the gas sensing properties. MWCNTs have attracted great interest owing to its unique physical and chemical properties. However, gas sensors based on pristine MWCNTs show low sensitivity and lack of selectivity to analytes for which they have low adsorption energy. Polypyrrole is a potential candidate in sensor applications among the conducting polymers due to its good electrical conductivity, environmental stability, and ease of synthesis. Various compositions of MWCNTs (0.5, 1, 3, and 5wt%) were tested for the gas sensor. The structural characterizations of conducting polymer-coated MWCNTs composites were carried out by FE-SEM and FT-IR and the gas sensitivity was measured by resistive response. |
