The purpose of this research is to study how offshore conditions, liquid properties and column diameter affect the effective surface area in a packed column. While it is obvious that liquid properties affect width and thickness of liquid film, their effects on area have not been correctly investigated. In addition, understanding of the effect of offshore conditions on the area is imperative to predict the mass transfer efficiency in a packed column installed on offshore plant such as LNG-FPSO. To obtain a scale-up factor for the area, two packed columns diameter were employed. In order to experimentally measure the effective surface area, NaOH / CO2 system was employed. The experiments were performed by varying offshore conditions, liquid properties and column diameter. The effective surface area can be calculated from a proper data processing method. Finally, we proposed a new correlation for the effective surface area in packed column with structured packing as a function of the varied conditions. |
