A study of Dielectric and Mechanical Properties of Si3N4/SiO2/BN in-situ Composites |

Si3N4 is a suitable material for high temperature radome application because of its good mechanical properties at room and elevated temperature. However, a studied Si3N4 has a relatively high dielectric constant of 7.9 – 8.2 at 8 – 10 GHz for the use of high temperature radomes material. In order to reduce the dielectric constant of Si3N4, Si3N4/SiO2/BN composites are fabricated by in-situ reaction process. In-situ synthesis of ceramic composites is an attractive and effective way to obtain advanced materials with excellent properties. The in-situ reaction process resulted in the uniform distribution of the constituents which made the composite ceramic revealed good flexural strength and dielectric constant. Microstructure, flexural strength, and dielectric properties were evaluated with respect to their compositions and sintering processes. The high flexural strength of 193 MPa and low dielectric constant of 5.4 could be obtained with the hot-pressed composites. |
