제목 | Thermomechanical Properties of Three Kinds of Gamma-irradiated Polyethylene powder Impregnated PMMA Bone Cements |
초록 | The use of PMMA bone cement for anchoring hip implants was introduced by Sir John Charnley in 1958.1 But, its poor thermomechanical properties have induced the reduction of the life span. To overcome these problems, we investigated the new hybrid composite PMMA bone cement impregnated with three kinds of gamma-irradiated polyethylene (200,000 g/mol, 3,800,000 g/mol, and 8,000,000 g/mol). It was characterized by means of FTIR-ATR, UTM, and digital thermometer. As shown in Figure 1 (a), (b), and (c), it was found that hydrophilic group (C=O) was produced to the surface of the three powders. It is expected that many strong chemical bond is generated between the three powders and PMMA bone cement due to the hydrophilic group and mechanical properties are improved. Also, the curing temperatures of the hybrid composite PMMA bone cements were decreased, as shown in Figure 2.
