Conventional lead-acid batteries were used for traction, industrial, golf-cart, energy storage applications around the world for a long time. Among them, demand for energy storage system is greatly increasing due to climate change and exhaustion of energy issue. In this presentation, comparison of PE and AGM separator and its application to ESS was introduced. Separator for lead acid battery can be divided into PE and AGM by raw material, production process, etc. PE separators are produced by extruding mixture of UHMWPE, silica powder and process oil. Due to polymer material, it has very strong and flexible properties. AGM separators are produced by wet-laid nonwoven process with water dispersed micro-glassfiber. So it has very large surface area, porosity and low electrical resistance but mechanical strength is weaker than PE separator. Both separators were used for ESS and cost reduction effect is expected through making hybrid system with Lithium-ion battery. |
