Recently, the adsorption technology has been offered with many advantages for arsenic removal such as simple and stable operation, cost effectiveness and effective removal. In this study, both As(III) and As(V) removal were evaluated under various physical and chemical conditions using four nanoscale adsorbents: iron(III) oxide, nano zero-valent iron (nZVI), nZVI/Mn oxide core/shell and silica supported iron-manganese oxide. nZVI showed much higher efficiency for As(III) removal than Fe(III) oxide despite of their similarity in capacity. By coating Mn oxide layer on the surface of nZVI, the nZVI/Mn oxide exhibited the better stability and adsorption capacity than the nZVI. The role of Mn oxide in increase of As(III) adsorption was proved in silica supported iron-manganese oxide adsorbent. The binary Fe-Mn oxide showed potentials as low cost adsorbents for removal of arsenic in water and ground water. |
