Use of magnetic biosorbent in the remediation of aqueous waste contaminated with heavy metal toxic ions |

The magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles were prepared by co-precipitation method and it was introduced to Chlorella vulgaris dry biomass. The materials were characterized by SEM-EDX, XRD and FT-IR analysis. The use of magnetic material has an additional advantage that the magnetic property makes the material easy separable from the solution. The magnetic biomass was further utilized for the removal of heavy metal toxic ions from aqueous solutions under batch and column reactor operations. Batch reactor experiment was conducted to study the effect of sorptive pH, initial concentration, contact time and background electrolytes concentration. It was observed that the biosorption is favoured by increasing the pH, initial concentration and contact time. Moreover, fixed bed reactor studies confirm the potential applicability of the magnetic biosorbents for the removal of heavy metal ions even under dynamic conditions. |
