This study aimed to examine the effect of two single, easy-to-make bioreactors: bubble column and airlift for large scale production of Haematococcus pluvialis. The reactors were made of cast polypropylene (CPP) film, which is very light and easy to manufacture. The operation volume was 25L in both reactors with the same gas flow rate, 2.5L/min. Results indicated that the bubble column reactor outperformed the airlift reactor with high biomass concentration, 1.02 ± 0.285 g/L compared with 0.50 ± 0.146 g/L achieved in airlift reactor at the end of the green stage. In terms of pigment contend, 13-day after the induction stage, the carotenoid-to-chlorophyll ratio was 0.60 and 0.37 in bubble column and airlift reactor, respectively. These results demonstrated that bubble column photobioreactor was suitable for large-scale production of Haematococcus pluvialis. |
