Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have been extensively investigated for their potential applications in transportations and portable electronics. The most critical issue for viable use of PEMFCs in aforementioned applications is known to be the CO poisoning of Pt catalysts, at the low operation temperature. In this study, we have investigated ion transport properties of ionic liquid (IL)-doped sulfonated block copolymers under anhydrous conditions towards high temperature fuel cell applications. By employing a range of ILs, it has been revealed that the type of anion in ILs plays a central role in determining ion transport properties of the IL-doped sulfonated block copolymers, attributed to the dissimilar mobilities and solvation dynamics of ions. In-depth studies on the conductivity of ILs-containing sulfonated block copolymers were carried out by combining impedance spectroscopy, SAXS, and PFG NMR in order to underpin factors governing their ion transport properties.. |
