Graphitic nanofibrous electrodes for all-vanadium redox flow battery |

Vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) has been focused as a one of next-generation large-scale energy storage devices. However, the polarization during the redox reactions in the carbon felt-type electrodes is one of the problems to be overcome for the stable cell performance. In this study, we fabricated graphitic nanofibrous electrode (GNE) with a high specific surface area of 213 m2 g-1 and highly graphitic structure for acid stability for a high energy efficiency of VRFB. The electrocatalytic properties of GNE led to beneficial catalytic effects such as low anodic and cathodic peak potential separation (△Ep) values of ~73.4 mV (catholyte) in a cyclic voltammetry conducted at a sweep rate of 2 mV s-1. In addition, a full cell test based on the GNE as negative and positive electrode indicated considerably improved energy efficiency of 85.8%, which is 12.4% higher than that (73.4%) of the commercial carbon felt-based VRFBs. |
