Thermoelectric (TE) materials are an eco-friendly means to solve global energy crisis by converting waste heat into electrical energy. Due to a highly anharmonic bonding, single-crystal p-type SnSe samples have a particularly high figure of merit (ZT) of ~2.6 at 923K along the b-axis. Despite the high Te performance, practical devices are limited due to the high cost and the long time required for synthesis. On the other hand, polycrystalline SnSe samples are advantageous for practical devices due to their advantages of machinability and massification. However, the problem is that it has a very low Te performance compared to single crystal samples. Therefore, solving TE properties of polycrystalline SnSe samples similar to or higher than single crystal samples are one of the most important reserch. In this presentation, we report the effect of Ge alloying on the polycrystalline SnSe systems to improve their TE properties. The best performing system achieves a high ZT of 1.4 at 800K. |
