Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) grafted 4-vinylbenzene sulfonate or 2-methyl-2-propene-1-sulfonic acid membranes were synthesized based on the solution-grafting technique. Alkaline-treated PVDF was used as a macromolecule in conjunction with sodium 4-vinylbenzene sulfonate and 2-methyl-2-propene-1-sulfonic acid in the graft copolymerization. The structure of modified PVDF was confirmed by FT-IR, 1H-NMR spectrometer. The membrane properties such as water content, ion exchange capacity, electrical resisrance, ion conductivity were measured. Thermal properties of the membranes were examined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). This can be realized by synthesizing a graft copolymer with a hydrophobic main chain which favors the formation of continuous ionic networks. |
