Development of gas hydrate inhibition polymer capable of absorbing lithium ion of sea water in oil and gas flowlines |

Low dosage hydrate inhibitors (LDHI) have been recently paid attention according as hydrate prevention strategies are shifted toward hydrate risk management. In this work, we synthesized a multifunctional hydrogel polymer, not only that is effective against the hydrate plug formation in offshore flowlines, but also that is capable of capturing lithium ion of sea water. As the first step, methacryloyloxymethyl-12-crown-4(M12C4) was synthesized by reacting methacryloyl chloride with substituted crown ether for the lithium ion recovery. The M12C4 was then polymerized with N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAAm) so as to form the hydrogel polymer, poly NIPAAm-co-M12C4). The addition of 0.5 wt% hydrogel polymer synthesized in this work induced significant hydrate inhibition performance thus, this work demonstrates that the multifunctional polymer should be one of LDHI materials to prevent hydrate blockage in offshore flowlines. |
