Smart Hydrogel Systems for Biomedical Applications |

Advancement in hydrogel development as functional biomaterials has gained momentum in the past decade due to their biomimetic nature and widespread biomedical applications. The requirement for instructive biomaterials that can direct and guide cell behavior and function have become essential and revolutionized the studies concerning hydrogels. Smart hydrogels capable of reversibly undergoing deformation and changing size or shape in response to external stimuli such as pH, temperature, and chemical triggers are thoroughly investigated. Hydrogel properties are mainly controlled by polymer-polymer or polymer-solvent interactions affected by ionic interactions, hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces. Herein, various structural and functional considerations were imparted in their development for enhancing regenerative properties, specifically engineered to have functional groups and structural feature that create a dynamic and tunable extracellular matrix-like environment. We will discuss hydrogels that were specifically designed to improve cell attachment, proliferation, as well as differentiation towards target tissue both in vitro and in vivo. |
