Nonlinear Black Phosphorus for Ultrafast All-Optical Switching |

The outstanding electronic and optical properties i. e., wide range layer-dependent tunable bandgap and high optical nonlinearity of black phosphorus (BP) in a unique two-dimensional structure made it an ideal optical material which can be utilized for various nonlinear functional devices for telecommunications, such as wavelength converters, optical switches and signal regenerators. However, much of the recent studies have been limited to saturable absorption depending on the imaginary part of the 3rd-order nonlinearity, while studies on the real part have not yet investigated much. In this experiment, for the first time, we demonstrate a nonlinear optical device employing evanescent field interaction of BP-based ultrafast optical switching for the propagating signals modulated at the frequency ranges up to 20 GHz. Performance criterion provides an enhancement of ~33% of the total nonlinear effect with the prepared device. |
