Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are excellent reinforcing materials for composites owing to their remarkable mechanical and electrical properties. For the excellent properties of CNTs to be realized in polymer composites, CNTs should be well dispersed in polymer matrices. However, it is difficult to homogeneously disperse CNTs in polymer matrix because strong van der Waals attraction between CNTs leads aggregates of CNTs in polymer matrix. In this study, we report synthesis of an effective compatibilizer to homogeneously disperse multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in Nylon 66 (N66). For this purpose, a new compatibilizer composed of backbone containing naphthalene and graft chain containing acrylic acid was synthesized, and the effect of this compatibilizer on dispersion of MWCNTs in N66 matrix is examined. Mechanical and electrical properties of N66/MWCNT/compatibilizer are measured as a function of the MWCNT content, and the properties are correlated to the dispersion of MWCNTs. |
