Novel Practical Method for 1-Hydroxypyrene Determination in Urine by Using Molecularly Imprinted TiO2 Gel |

A novel method for detecting 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) in human urine by using molecularly imprinted TiO2 gel was developed. This method can be practically applied on patients in a hospital to estimate the degree of exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. We first attempted 1-OHP molecular imprinting to deposit TiO2 gel thin films on quartz plates. After 1-OHP template removal, the 1-OHP-imprinted films showed better recognition and higher selectivity toward 1-OHP than toward other similar materials. The results obtained were applied to bead materials to enlarge their surface area; such beads could have practical application in a hospital. 1-OHP-imprinted beads were used to extract and collect 1-OHP from a patient’s urine by an easy and simple method, and the 1-OHP amount was detected using HPLC. This method is very accurate, as well as cheaper and faster than the enzyme-based method that was previously used in the hospital. |
