Liquid crystalline conjugated polymer can emit polarized light. In this study, we synthesized a series of alkylthioether-substituted (T-PPV) and alkylsulfone-substituted(S-PPV) poly(p-phenylenevinylene) derivatives through the well-known Wittig condensation polymerization. They were characterized using x-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, UV-vis absorption, and photoluminescence spectroscopy measurement, The synthesized polymers were highly soluble in common organic solvents. S-PPVs showed blue-shifted emission compared to T-PPVs probably due to electro-withdrawing effect of alkylsulfone substituent. All these polymers showed liquid crystalline behavior. |
