The structural and chemical identities of Cu/ZnO and Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 for methanol synthesis have been recently understood in a sophisticated manner. These catalysts have been generally prepared by coprecipitation including multiple steps in each of which small change of a parameter influences physicochemical property and catalytic performance. The major phase for an active Cu/ZnO-based catalyst is zincian malachite obtained by substitution of Cu2+ in malachite by Zn2+. In Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts, incorporation of Al3+ (up to ca. 3.3%) with Zn2+ is possible. However, when prepared with high Al concentrations, hydrotalcite (HT) phase is developed, which is known to be detrimental to methanol synthesis activity. In this talk, several approaches will be introduced to tune the composition of HT phase in Cu/ZnO-based catalyst systems. |
