Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) have attracted considerable research interest because of their ability to convert sunlight into electrical energy at low cost and easy fabrication. Although remarkable advances have been made with ruthenium(II) dyes as sensitizers in DSCs, there is still a need to develop new dyes and optimize their chemical and physical properties to further improve the solar cells. In this context, we have successfully introduced cyano acrylic acid group in to 4’-(2-Thienyl)-2,2’:6’,2”-terpyridine ligand. This modified ligand along with 4,4’-dicarboxy-2,2’-dipyridyl ligand were effectively subjected for the synthesis of a series of three heteroleptic ruthenium(II) sensitizers. The synthesized ruthenium(II) sensitizers were characterized by spectroscopic and electrochemical methods. The synthesized sensitizers are applied to fabricate the DSCs and photovoltaic performances were investigated. |
