The growth of high quality ZnS thin films synthesized using chemical bath deposition (CBD) route: The effect of various non-toxic complexing agents and their mixtures on the film properties |

The effect of different complexing agents like ethylenediamine tetra-acetate disodium salt (Na2EDTA), hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA), Urea, and Tri-sodium citrate (Na3-citrate) as well the mixture of Na2EDTA with Urea and HMTA on the quality of the ZnS thin films is reported. The chemical bath deposition method was employed to synthesis ZnS films on soda lime glass substrates where in aqueous solutions of zinc acetate and thioacetamide were used for the deposition bath having the acidic medium and optimized pH 4. The structural, morphological and optical properties of ZnS thin films are found to be significantly influenced by the nature and mixture of complexing agents. X-ray diffraction study showed that Na2EDTA has a hexagonal (wurtzite) structure. However, ZnS thin films deposited with mixed complexing agents has a nanocrystalline phase having cubic (zincblende) with hexagonal (wurtzite) structure, without any other ZnO phase. The FE-SEM images showed that ZnS thin films deposited with Na2EDTA has a smooth surface morphology without any agglomerated particle with thickness below 50 nm. However, the films deposited with mixed complexing agents are more uniform and well adherent as compared to that deposited with Na2EDTA. The EDS study shows that, the deposited nanocrystalline ZnS thin films are slightly rich in Zn. The transmission spectrum of ZnS thin films is affected by film thickness and average transmittance of 70 to 85 % is observed for ZnS films having 50 to 200 nm.XPS analysis confirms the presence of both Zn-S and Zn-(OH) bonding for the ZnS thin film deposited with Na2EDTA as complexing agent. However, the ZnS thin films grown with mixed complexing agents were more closed Zn-S bonding. |
