A demand of mono-dispersed silica particles with various sizes is steadily increasing due to their wide range of applications. In order to prepare silica particles, we used two phase method, which employs L-arginine amino acid as a hydrolysis catalyst. The size range of silica particles through this method could be controlled from 20 nm to 80 nm, and these mono-disperse silica particles could be successfully used as seeds in the conventional Stöber method. Furthermore, the 100nm particles were treated with 3-trimethoxysilyl propyl methacrylate (MPS) to polymerize methyl methacrylate (MMA) on the surface of the silica particles. Shell thickness of silica@PMMA particles could be increased by increasing the amount of MMA monomer. We expect that the core-shell particles have discriminative properties such as optical, biological and electric properties compared with simple colloids’ ones. |
