Perfluoropolyethers (PFPEs) have been used due to stability, mechanical robustness, and corrosion protection. A series of perfluoro-2,5-dimethyl-3,6-dioxanonanoic acid esters was synthesized by an esterification reaction of the corresponding PFPE precursors. The synthesis resulted in the mixture of mono- and di-methyl end-groups. Preliminary results indicated that the two molecules have slightly different hydrodynamic volumes. Using gel permeation chromatography (GPC), the separation of mono- and di-methyl PFPEs were attempted. Therefore, we employed preparative GPC that can be operated in a laboratory. To execute the separation, pre-swollen porous polystyrene beads were loaded in the column, and the mixture was added. Each fraction was collected and analyzed by GPC, along with the complete characterization by FT-IR, and NMR. We found that there was a partial separation of these molecules. The future work will be on the optimization of chromatography conditions for complete separation. |
