Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) involves an acute unexplained hearing loss, which occurs over at least 72 hours. It is well known that the steroid drugs can improve hearing levels in SSNHL. In recent, the local delivery which can offer fewer side effects and higher local concentration of a given medicine compared to the systemic one has been commonly adapted to treat the SSNHL. However, its burst release and fast clearance from the applied site through an eustachian tube still remained as a challenge in clinical practice. In this study, we prepared ion-complexed dexamethasone-loaded thermo-sensitive hydrogel for the sustained release of drug and residence stability at the applied site for sufficient period, and thus effective treatment of the SSNHL. Their remedial effect for the SSNHL was also evaluated by animal study using a rat model (This work (C0007124) was supported by Korea Small and Medium Business Administration in 2012). |
