Recently, electro- and magneto-responsive materials, known as electrorheological and magnetorheological fluids, respectively, have been the subjects of many researches as one of the smart materials showing interesting properties of rheology under an external field (e.g. an electric and magnetic field). They show a reversible transition from a fluid-like to a solid-like state under an applied field, thus causing a yield stress with following a shear stress increase of the fluid above the yield point. These rheological changes in these fluids are very fast and reversible within the order of milliseconds, so that they have been considered for various applications in electromechanical devices including shock absorber and clutch which can be controlled in an active way. In this talk, synthesis of various polymeric materials including conducting polymers and polymer nanocomposites and their interesting rheological characteristics along with their potential applications will be introduced. |
