Carbonyl iron (CI) particles have been widely used as suspended particles in magnetorheological (MR) fluids. Nonetheless, carbonyl iron has some difficulties being applied for MR fluid due to its high density. To overcome these problems, we prepared magnetic composite particles with carbonyl iron and PMMA. PMMA/CI composite microspheres were fabricated via suspension polymerization with methyl methacrylate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and carbonyl iron. The synthesized magnetic particle showed regular sphere morphology by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, the magnetic composite was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The obtained magnetic particles were dispersed in mineral oil applied for the MR fluid. The MR properties of the PMMA/CI suspensions were examined under an external magnetic field using a parallel-plate typed rheometer (MCR300). |
