Traditionally, much of the focus on nanoparticle/block copolymer nanocomposites has been on the passive dispersion of nanoparticles in block copolymer matrices in bulk or thin films. However, appropriately tuned nanoparticles in block copolymer thin films can actively induce a perpendicular orientation of microdomains by segregating to both the substrate and free surface to effectively neutralize interfacial interactions. In this research, star polymers with P(S-r-MMA) arms were used as organic nanoparticle additives in PS-b-PMMA thin films. The effects of arm composition, arm length, star polymer content, and film thickness on the morphology and orientation of the block copolymer matrices were investigated. It was found that microdomains orient perpendicular to the substrate when the star polymer has a "neutral," or non-selective composition. |
