Graphene has been attracted a lot of attention due to its outstanding properties such as high transparency, high electron and hole mobility, and so on. Despite of its unique characteristics, graphene has limitations for practical applications due to its super-hydrophobic nature. Therefore, graphene cannot be dispersed in any common media and has extremely poor processability. To solve the inherent problem of carbon-based materials, functionalization is required to endorse processability. Here, we report edge-selective functionalization of graphite with maleic anhydride or maleimide via Diels-Alder reaction driven by a very simple mechanochemical ball-milling. Edge-functionalized graphene nanoplatelets can be efficiently afforded by dispersing in polar solvents. |
