Simultaneous detection and removal of radioisotopes using organic/inorganic hybridized alginate bead |

Ion exchange is widely used for metal ion separation, as well as for the removal of hazardous materials from aqueous waste. A typical sol−gel process consists of catalyzed hydrolysis and condensation of an initially small molecule leading to its transformation to an intricate, highly viscous polymeric network and then ultimately resulting in the formation of a gel. We prepared crosslinked alginate beads with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and azo dye (TD1-A) using sol-gel process. Colorimetric analysis was carried out by RGB% values from the sample spots in the scanned images of the beads, and the RGB% values of beads were calculated using Adobe Photoshop CS5.1. The TD1-A beads enabled simultaneous removal and detection of Co2+ ions through change of RGB% values. The TD1-A beads exhibited a color change from pink to purple upon addition of Co2+ ions. The RGB% values of TD1-A beads increased gradually as the concentration of Co2+ ions increased. |
