A number of depigmenting agents have been developed for conditions of undesirable skin discoloration but none are completely satisfactory. It is important to find new and safe skin depigmenting agents from natural sources to meet this growing demand. Ixora coccinea is a common plant in the world, it was reported that Ixora coccinea showed antiinflammatory and antipyretic activity, but not yet the whitening activity. In this study, we found Ixora coccinea, located in Philippine, could inhibit melanin synthesis without cytotoxicity with an IC50 of 74.534ug/ml. Ixora coccinea showed neither antioxidant activity nor inhibition on both in vivo and in vitro tyrosinase assay. We assumed that the whitening mechanism of Ixora coccinea may be related to other pathway instead of inhibition of tyrosinase activity. For conclusion, Ixora coccinea can be utilized as a raw material for whitening cosmetic. |
