Diffusion of molecules determines the physical property of materials such as viscosity and plays a critical role in chemical reactions, separation, processing, and many other applications. Since Einstein analyzed the Brownian motion of colloids in dilute solutions, diffusion has been considered as a well-understood phenomenon. However, recent studies on biological and materials systems reported anomalous and non-Gaussian dynamic behaviors, which should call for new perspectives on our understanding of dynamics in complex systems. We have investigated the diffusion of proteins and colloids in various systems including cell membranes, two dimensional colloids and bulk metallic glasses. In this presentation, we will briefly show our simulation results on interesting dynamic behaviors of proteins and colloids and compare them to recent experiments. |
